Initiation of breastfeeding

Breastfeeding is often started already in the delivery room or at least as soon as possible after delivery. Each mother-baby pair is unique and a successful start for breastfeeding requires practice from both the mother and the child. Feel free to ask for help and advice from your maternity hospital or counseling center.

The first weeks of breastfeeding

The first few weeks of breastfeeding can be very intense and it can feel like you have to breastfeed all the time. For the baby, the first weeks after birth are like the fourth trimester of pregnancy, and the baby gets used to the new world preferably by being held and carried. The beginning can seem challenging and at this stage, everything, that makes everyday life easier, should be done. Comfortable and relaxed clothes suitable for breastfeeding and cuddling with the baby make long breastfeeding marathons easier. Soft and absorbent nursing pads serve as an essential aid during breastfeeding not letting breastmilk get through to stain your bra and clothing.

The benefits of breastfeeding and the importance of skin contact

Breastfeeding has numerous health benefits for both the breastfeeding mother and the child. When it's going well, breastfeeding is often the easiest way to feed the baby, because the food is always fresh, at the right temperature, and hygienic. For a baby, being by your side is more than just food, and this security and closeness in skin-to-skin contact is essential for the baby. In skin-to-skin contact, the baby's basic vital functions remain stable, and the baby stays warm, while skin-to-skin contact also relieves possible pain.

For a newborn, a tricot baby carrier is a great aid if the baby is crying and you need your hands free. With the help of the sling, you can keep the baby close to you.  In a babywearing sling, the baby can be carried by either one of the parents or another care keeper. A baby carrier can also be an unforgettable experience for grandparents. Breastfeeding is possible in a baby carrier. There are many babywearing groups on social media, for example. You can search for a local one in your area.

How long to breastfeed?

The duration of breastfeeding is individual for everyone, and it is affected by many things from moods to health obstacles. There is not one right way to breastfeed and each mother can decide how long to breastfeed. It is good to know, that the right kind of nursing wear makes night feeding easier. Comfortable, long nursing nightgowns are designed for night feeding. World Health Organization advises, that breastfeeding can be continued as long as the mother and child want, and recommends breastfeeding for at least two years.

Breastfeeding and pain

Breastfeeding should be painless. Most often, breastfeeding pain is caused by poor suction, which can have several different causes. However, the first thing you can do is try to improve the baby's position, i.e. make sure that the baby is low enough and the nose is at the nipple, in which case the baby bends the head back and grabs the breast with a big grip. When breastfeeding, the mother's position can also be unergonomic, in which case especially the shoulders and hands can get sore. When looking for a good position, you should use a nursing pillow or regular pillows for your aid.

Breast infection

The most common symptoms of mastitis are a rapidly rising fever and pain in the breasts. The breast is cold, swollen, and tender. Mastitis is related to breastfeeding and warmth, rest, and frequent breastfeeding are recommended as treatments. Merino wool breast warmers and nursing pads protect and warm sensitive breasts. Natural merino wool breathes and cares for sensitive skin. Coolness weakens milk curdling and can contribute to mastitis. The nursing top made of merino wool warms sensitive breasts and is suitable to be used in every season.

Menstruation and breastfeeding

If the mother does not breastfeed, menstruation starts about five weeks after giving birth. The duration of the postpartum discharge is individual and generally lasts 6-8 weeks. The amount of leakage varies and at first more absorbent menstrual protection is needed. Washable pads and menstrual underwear designed for nighttime use are excellent for postpartum bleeding. When breastfeeding is stopped, menstruation usually starts within three months. Postpartum bleeding is often difficult to predict, and different types of spots appear when the body and hormone function change. In this case, it's worth taking the easy and popular period panty for your peace and help, so you can forget stressing about unpleasant surprises and leaks.

Until what age should/can you breastfeed?

Mother and child can decide for themselves how long breastfeeding will continue. If you want to continue breastfeeding, returning to work or studying or a certain age of the child are not reasons to stop. With the help of different nursing tops, breastfeeding a toddler is easy and comfortable. You can easily and quickly give a drop of milk for example, in the yard of a kindergarten. Sometimes the child will wean itself, for example, at the start of a new pregnancy, but even then it is not necessary to stop if breastfeeding does not become too painful due to the sensitivity of the breasts or cause contractions. As breastfeeding continues longer, it usually changes at the mother's pace, i.e. breastfeeding when it suits the mother.

When to stop breastfeeding or switch to partial breastfeeding?

If the safety signs of breastfeeding with a small baby are met, full breastfeeding is enough for a healthy baby as the only food source for the first 6 months. If pumping milk is not possible and the mother has to be away from the small baby, or if the father wants an opportunity to participate in the feeding, besides pumped breast milk you can also give the baby a breast milk substitute (formula).

The nursing top and different nursing wear make everyday life easier and faster even when it is necessary to pump milk. At around six months the child can start to taste solid foods. Breastfeeding is not mandatory and you can stop it whenever you feel like it. If the child is less than one year old at the end of breastfeeding, a substitute milk formula should be given (under 6 months) or weaning formula (over 6 months).
