What is cotton?

Cotton is a natural fiber made from the seed pods of the cotton plant. Cotton is one of the world's most widely used textile fibers, as it is breathable, pleasant to the skin, and highly absorbent. Cotton fabric is a soft and durable choice for clothing, home textiles, and children's products. Ecologically grown organic cotton is an increasingly responsible option that does not use artificial fertilizers or pesticides.

What types of cotton fabrics are there?

There are several types of cotton fabrics, and they differ according to the weave, surface, thickness, and purpose of the fabric. One of the best-known cotton fabrics is the elastic cotton jersey used in everyday clothing. Cotton jersey is a flexible and soft material knitted from cotton yarn - ideal for sweaters and jackets. Cotton poplin, used in shirts and dresses, is a dense, smooth, and semi-shiny fabric. Bed sheet fabric is a tightly woven plain weave cotton. Muslin, or gauze fabric, is a light and airy fabric familiar from baby gauze. Interior textiles and bags that require strength and durability are usually sewn from Canvas cotton. Traditional cotton fabrics also include various french terry fabrics and stretch sweatshirts used in everyday clothing.

What is rib knit?

Rib knit is a flexible and tight-knit fabric used to finish sweatshirts and jerseys at the cuffs, neckline, waist, and other points where a tighter fit is needed. In addition to cotton, the ribbed knit usually contains elastane, which makes it both soft and flexible - the perfect choice for comfortable clothing! Pre-cut rib binding is a thin roll cut from the ribbed knit, which is sewn using an edge turner, for example, to the necklines of tops.

Washing cotton fabrics

Cotton fabric is easy to care of and, if washed correctly, will remain beautiful and durable for a long time. Most cotton fabrics can withstand washing at 40–60 degrees. Use a mild detergent suitable for colored textiles and a detergent containing bleach only for white fabrics. Air drying is recommended for cotton fabrics; when spinning, a light spin is sufficient, as cotton can wrinkle in a hard spin. It is best to iron cotton when slightly damp, which will straighten out wrinkles easily. Always remember to check the washing instructions in the fabric information or on the wash label of the finished product.

Dyeing cotton fabric

Cotton fabric can be dyed industrially or at home, and it affects the appearance, feel, and care instructions of the fabric. Reactive dyes are most often used in dyeing, which chemically adhere to the fiber and withstand washing well. Industrial dyeing ensures a uniform and long-lasting result, and pre-dyed cotton fabrics are ready to sew right away. At home, you can dye cotton fabrics with washing machine dyes or vegetable dyes. Remember to use the right dyeing aids, such as salt or baking soda, to fix the color. Dyed cotton may bleed a little during the first few washes, so we recommend washing separately and rinsing with vinegar first to fix the color.
