PUL Waterproof Fabrics and Thin Softis for Zero Waste Products
Polyurethane laminated polyester, or PUL breathable in short, is a waterproof and rustle-free moisture barrier fabric. The fabric has been developed in cooperation with various experts specifically to suit cloth diaper use, and it is also a great alternative to laminated terry cloth.
PFAS-free moisture barrier fabric
The PUL fabric in our selection, as well as the thinner Softis, is manufactured in Europe. They are proven to be safe, chemical-free, and OEKO-TEX certified fabrics. Features of the breathable, waterproof PUL fabric:
- Waterproof and sturdy - withstands repeated washings at various temperatures.
- Does not shrink, does not pill, and retains its color despite heavy wear and tear.
Thin and breathable Softis
The exceptionally thin Softis fabric is waterproof just like the PUL diaper fabric. We highly recommend this thinner quality, especially for sewing period underwear and cloth pads.

What does PUL fabric mean?
PUL fabric stands for polyurethane laminated thin polyester fabric that is waterproof. The thin and breathable waterproof membrane is attached to the reverse side of the polyester fabric using the KEEP TECH hotmelt lamination process with the help of heat and microscopic glue dots.
Is PUL safe for babies?
Yes, you can safely use the PUL fabrics in our selection for everyone from babies to grandparents. We manufacture our fabrics in Europe, backed by our extensive experience since 2004, when we first began developing materials for cloth diaper use.
What is PUL fabric used for?
The fabric is highly versatile and can be used in various applications where waterproof protection is needed. Uses include:
- cloth diapers
- waterproof bags (wet bags)
- mattress protectors
- washable nursing pads
- bibs
-
changing mats
Tip: You can use sewing scraps to make lightweight and flexible mud mitts!
Thin Softis for sewing cloth pads
The thin Softis fabric features the same waterproof membrane as the PUL diaper fabric. The face fabric is an exceptionally thin polyester, making Softis perfect for sewing projects where the fabric remains hidden, such as cloth pads. Softis is an excellent fabric for period underwear, and it can also be used under jacket linings or in beanies over the ears as a wind stopper.
Sewing instructions for moisture barrier fabrics
With PUL fabrics, the laminated side is on the reverse (wrong) side of the fabric and can often feel slightly tacky. Sewing is easiest when this tacky, reverse side is not facing the presser foot.
If your sewing machine has a Teflon presser foot, it is worth switching to it, as it glides much better than a standard foot. Teflon tape stuck to the bottom of your regular presser foot achieves the same result.
Choose a thin Microtex needle, as it won't break the fabric fibers and makes the smallest possible hole for the stitch. Also, make sure the needle tip is intact so it doesn't create unnecessary holes in the PUL fabric.
Do not use straight pins; instead, secure the fabric layers together using Wonder Clips or even small paperclips.
PUL vs. TPU
PUL stands for Polyurethane Laminated fabric. TPU stands for Thermoplastic Polyurethane. Both are used in waterproof barrier fabrics, but the manufacturing methods and characteristics can vary. Myllymuksut moisture barrier fabrics are manufactured using the KEEP TECH hotmelt lamination method, where the waterproof membrane is bonded to the fabric without harmful PFAS chemicals.
Why choose Myllymuksut PUL fabric?
- Made in Europe
- PFAS-free moisture barrier fabric
- OEKO-TEX certified
- Developed for cloth diaper use
- Experience with PUL since 2004
- Safe for babies
